Overview

Royal jelly extract is an emollient derived from royal jelly, a specialized bee product that is used in the beehive to feed the larvae. It is called ‘royal’ jelly because when a bee larva is fed large amounts of this jelly, it develops to become a queen.

There is a wealth of research on royal jelly, since it has been used in alternative medicine for centuries. It consists of water, proteins, fats, sugars, and various other minor compounds. The proteins and fatty acids in royal jelly are likely the compounds responsible for its emollient properties.

It has been shown that the main fatty acid, 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid, is able to protect the skin cells from photoaging by stimulating the production of collagen in the skin. The proteins of royal jelly also have anti-inflammatory properties.
