CI 19140 is a colorant that is sometimes also listed as FD&C Yellow 5. Frequently found in hand soaps, lotions, and creams, this colorant is approved for use in the EU.
Technically, this colorant is known as tartrazine, and it is in a class of dyes called azo dyes. A dye is a water-soluble colorant not to be confused with a pigment, which does not mix well with water. CI 19140 is bright yellow in color and normally very little of it is required in order to have a powerful effect.
