Overview
Trisodium ethylenediamine disuccinate is a type of ingredient known as a chelating agent. A chelating agent works to disable harmful heavy metal ions from water-based skincare products.
Without a chelating agent, the heavy metal ions present in these products can react with oxygen in the air to create reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are not only harmful to the stability of the product but also to the health of the body (they cause oxidative stress). A chelating agent surrounds the metal ions to prevent them from reacting with oxygen in the first place, and this can enhance the stability of the product, as well as the efficacy of the other ingredients.
