Overview

Totarol is an antimicrobial and antioxidant bioactive compound that occurs naturally in cypress trees, although it was first isolated from Podocarpus totara, a yew tree found in New Zealand.

Experiments show that totarol is effective at inhibiting or killing a wide range of microbes and can be used to create an antimicrobial coating of various surfaces (e.g. surgical tools or dental implants).

It offers the same antimicrobial benefits in skincare, not only for the skin but also for the skincare product itself.
