Thyme oil is extracted by steam distillation from the leaves of common thyme.
There are many different varieties of thyme, differing mainly in fragrance and composition (of the essential oil). Thyme is a common kitchen herb and spice, as well as a powerful medicinal herb used to treat a cough (used in teas, syrups, and inhalers).
Thyme essential oil mainly contains thymol. This compound has a warm, spicy, herbal scent and is also antiseptic. It includes other compounds in smaller amounts such as p-cymene, myrcene, borneol, and linalool.
Thyme essential oil is used in skincare as a fragrance, and also for its antiseptic properties.
