Overview

Swertia chirata extract is a very bitter, astringent, and healing extract derived from Swertia chirata, a popular medicinal herb. Swertia is a source of various bioactive compounds, namely xanthonoids, iridoids, flavonoids, alkaloids, and terpenes. Each of these has different chemical structures, properties, and biological effects, but what they all have in common is their very bitter taste.

The ingredient can be added to skincare products to improve skin tone (although it rarely is used). In research, it was shown that Swertia chirata extract was able to increase cell turnover and regeneration of the skin, as well as reduce the appearance of vertical wrinkles.

Apparently, this was due to the ability of swertiamarin to stimulate the cross-talk between adipose stem cells and epidermal keratinocytes, which improved the self-healing abilities of the skin. This makes Swertia chirata extract a good prospective anti-aging and wound healing ingredient.

The plant has a deep tradition in Indian Ayurvedic medicine for the treatment of skin problems, along with Gotu Kola and Neem.
