Overview

Sorbitan sesquioleate is a nonionic surfactant that serves primarily as a water-in-oil emulsifier. In addition, this ingredient can also be combined with more water-loving emulsifiers, like cetearyl alcohol and ceteareth-20, to support the formation of oil-in-water emulsions. This liquid ingredient is yellow to amber in color and completely transparent.

Sorbitan sesquioleate can function as a dispersing agent, too, in which it allows solid particles to be chemically suspended into an oil. For example, this ingredient can disperse the sunscreen active zinc oxide into an oily solvent, such as isopropyl isostearate. This is useful for thorough incorporation of minerals, including many colorants, into a wide range of skincare products.
