Sophora Angustifolia root extract is derived from the roots of the shrubby sophora, a plant commonly found in Asia. Sophora has been used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat various skin diseases, fever, and inflammation.
Some studies show that Sophora Angustifolia extracts are effective in lightening hyperpigmentation, with effects similar to that of hydroquinone or niacinamide. The plant has the ability to block tyrosinase, which is the compound responsible for melanin formation in the skin (and it can therefore be used to reduce the appearance of dark spots on the skin).
The root extract, in particular, has also been shown to contain flavonoids, which have anti-inflammatory effects.
