Overview

Sodium sulfite is an inorganic compound that is comprised of sodium, sulfur and oxygen atoms. This ingredient is supplied as a yellow powder and is decently soluble in water.

In skincare products, sodium sulfate is used as an antioxidant, in which it protects other ingredients that may be sensitive to oxidation.

In addition to functioning as an antioxidant, sodium sulfite also serves as a preservative. It has antibacterial characteristics and can be paired with fungicidal ingredients to create broad spectrum protection.

Finally, sodium sulfite is a reducing agent, which is what makes it effective at protecting ingredients that are vulnerable to oxidation.
