Overview

Sodium sulfate is an inorganic sodium salt of sulfuric acid that often exists in hydrates, meaning that the ingredient contains a molecular equivalent of water. Supplied as a white powder, this ingredient is highly soluble in water.

It is commonly found in skincare products that require a bulking agent to increase the volume of product present, such as pressed powders.

In addition, sodium sulfate also acts as viscosity controlling agent, in which it can thicken and stabilize emulsions. Sodium sulfate is commonly used in water-in-oil emulsions as a stabilizing agent, and it can occasionally be found in oil-in-water emulsions for the same purpose.
