Silybum marianum extract is an extract from the seeds of milk thistle (Silybum marianum). It is rich in beneficial compounds called flavonolignans. Silybum marianum extract has its applications in skincare as a powerful antioxidant, meaning that it is able to protect the skin from harmful environmental influence and from UV-induced toxicity. Thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties it can also soothe and calm down the irritated skin.
The main bioactive compound is a mixture of flavonolignans jointly called silymarin. The fruit extract also contains phytosterols, flavonoids, and fatty acids – which enhance the overall beneficial effects of the silybum marianum extract.
Traditionally (and nowadays also medically) milk thistle has been used to treat problems concerning the liver (such as liver insufficiency, hepatitis, poisoning, or alcoholic liver syndrome). As far as the current medical knowledge goes, it is the most powerful treatment to restore liver health and is very safe to use (with no side effects aside from a possible allergic reaction).
You can find it in many different supplements and it has even been registered as a drug.
