Secale cereale seed extract is an extract obtained from rye seeds that have been soaked in water and then subjected to enzymatic hydrolysis (i.e. chopping up the large polysaccharides and proteins into smaller pieces).
There are several patents mentioning rye extract: one claims that it has anti-wrinkle properties and can improve the general appearance of aging skin, while another states that rye seed extract improves the anti-wrinkle effects of other ingredients.
These claims, however, have not yet been verified by any clinical study, and so we cannot be sure. Rye seed extract may also be used as an abrasive (gently removing the dead skin cells) or bulking (expanding the volume of the product) ingredient.
The extract contains gluten and so gluten intolerant people should avoid this ingredient.
