Overview

Scutellaria baicalensis root extract has antioxidant, soothing, and astringent properties, and is derived from the roots of the Baikal/Chinese skullcap, or the Scutellaria baicalensis.

This plant, a staple in Chinese traditional medicine, has attracted the attention of scientists worldwide due to its content of various unique flavonoids – baicalein, wogonin, wogonoside, and scutellarein, to name a few. These flavonoids have powerful antioxidant and astringent properties and are used in skincare products to soothe irritated and inflamed skin and to protect from UV-induced oxidative damage.

A study has looked into the potential anti-pigment properties of these flavonoids and found that wogonin and wogonoside show good anti-pigment activity in test-tube experiments. This, however, requires testing on humans before it can be confirmed.
