Schisandra chinensis fruit extract is an antioxidant, soothing, and moisturizing (humectant) extract obtained from the berries of the Chinese magnolia-vine, Schisandra chinensis.
The main bioactive compounds from the pink berries are called lignans, which have very good soothing and immunomodulatory effects (which can be utilized for acne, atopic dermatitis, and other inflammatory skin problems).
Research also mentions its antioxidant properties and ability to protect against UV-induced skin damage. These effects most likely stem from the combination of the lignans with the other antioxidants found in the berries, such as flavonoids, anthocyanins, and organic acids.
The fruits also contain various polysaccharides, which, especially in a water-based extract, have humectant moisturizing properties.
The fruits of the Schisandra have recently gained international recognition as a good source of dietary antioxidants and as a medicinal herb rooted in Chinese traditional medicine.
