Sanguisorba officinalis root extract is an astringent and cleansing extract derived from the roots of the Sanguisorba officinalis, also known as great burnet. This plant has thick roots that contain a high amount of tannins (which have astringent properties) and saponins (which acts as a cleansing agent).
According to one study made on cell cultures, the saponins have some anti-wrinkle effects (by boosting the production of collagen), although this has not yet been confirmed.
The root extract has been used in European and Chinese traditional medicine for centuries to stop bleeding and to heal wounds. These effects are said to be reflected in the flowers, which are dark blood red in color.
