An extract from Chia seeds that contains emollient seed oil and humectant moisturizing amino acids and polysaccharides. The latter forms water-binding mucilage. Organic acids and flavonoids have antioxidant properties.

Salvia hispanica seed extract is an emollient extract with humectant properties obtained from chia seeds that is closely related to common sage.
The seeds are tiny, black, and very oily, with a 30% oil content. The seed coating contains large amounts of mucilage that develop upon soaking the seeds in water. This gelatinous mucilage consists of polysaccharides and has good water-binding properties.
Salvia hispanica seed extract may also contain other compounds, depending on the extraction process. Chia seeds contain antioxidant compounds such as organic acids (caffeic, chlorogenic, and gallic acid), flavonoids (myricetin and kaempferol), and phytosterols.
Amino acids and proteins might also be present in the extract, offering emollient properties.
