Saccharomyces cerevisiae extract is made from the single-cell yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae (more commonly known as baker’s yeast). Baker’s yeast has been used for centuries in making beer, wine, baked goods, and other fermented products.
Saccharomyces cerevisiae extract contains amino acids, nucleic acids (building blocks of DNA), peptides, a special polysaccharide called beta-glucan, and various minerals and vitamins (mainly B vitamins). They have moisturizing (humectant) properties because the mixture of amino acids is able to retain water in the skin, while the vitamins and minerals support the healthy function of skin cells.
Beta-glucan has been praised as a wound healing compound with a huge amount of research behind it.
