Ruscus aculeatus, or Butcher’s broom, is a small evergreen shrub that grows in Europe. It offers soothing, astringent, and venotonic properties in skincare products and can help with redness, microcirculation, and swelling.
The name comes from the purpose it was once used for: to clean and scrub butcher shops. The root is the source of phytochemicals called steroid saponins; the extract has been widely used in medicine and even registered as a drug to treat varicose veins, heavy legs, chronic venous insufficiency, and ankle swelling. The application is very similar to that of Aescin, a compound isolated from horse chestnut seeds.
You can read more about Aescin here: Escin.
