Overview

Rosmarinus officinalis leaf oil is an essential oil distilled from the leaves of rosemary (now renamed with Latin name, Salvia rosmarinus, previously known as Rosmarinus officinalis). It is used as a fragrance in skincare products and has a spicy, earthy, camphoraceous scent. According to some research, this essential oil may also have antioxidant properties.

The main chemical constituents responsible for the rosemary scent are cineole, camphor, and pinene. The exact composition varies from plant to plant because there are different-smelling cultivars and it also depends on the place of origin.

Rosemary essential oil should never be used undiluted directly on the skin. It is used in skincare products in only single-digit percentages or less. Even so, it may cause skin irritation in more sensitive individuals.
