Overview

Rose flower oil is an essential oil obtained from the petals of various species of rose. It is used as a fragrance in skincare.

The compounds responsible for the characteristic “rosy” scent are beta-damascenone, beta-damascone, and beta-ionone. There are many different species of rose, each boasting strongly fragrant flowers and an individual scent (the small differences in scent are due to the diverse essential oil composition).

The main two species cultivated for essential oil production are Damask rose (Rosa damascena) and Cabbage rose (Rosa centifolia). Bulgaria is one of the main producents of rose oil.
