Resveratrol is a famous plant-based polyphenol found mainly in red grapes, red wine, and several other berries. It is a potent antioxidant that protects against UV light damage, assists in wound healing, and helps to treat inflammatory skin diseases.
Some laboratory studies suggest that it might be a good anti-aging ingredient, but there are no clinical studies on real humans as of yet.
Resveratrol was praised as a magical cure-all phytochemical and many researchers delved into various experiments trying to find out how it works. But, as is unfortunately common with these “magic” plant-based compounds, the results of the larger clinical studies showed mixed results and the excitement is wearing off a bit.
Resveratrol is indeed a potent antioxidant, but its effects are very non-specific. We therefore have to take those praises with a grain of salt.
Including more antioxidants in your food and skincare products is almost always a good idea (so in that regard having resveratrol in your cream is a good thing) but it is important to remember that this ingredient is definitely not a miracle worker.
