Overview
Quartz is the second most common mineral found in the earth’s crust – the most common being feldspar. This mineral is comprised of silicon and oxygen atoms, which makes it a type of silica.
In skincare products, quartz is ground into a fine powder and used as an abrasive. Abrasives are a special type of ingredient that exfoliate the skin and remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin.
Due to the hardness of quartz, the particle size is generally constrained to 500 microns or less, where larger particles sizes are used for body exfoliation and smaller particles sizes are used for facial exfoliation.
