Punica granatum seed oil, or pomegranate seed oil, is a (usually) cold-pressed oil from pomegranate seeds. The seeds are produced in large amounts as a byproduct of pomegranate fruit processing, but they themselves are a rich source of oil and other beneficial compounds.
The main component of pomegranate seed oil is punicic acid, a rare polyunsaturated fatty acid. This oil is rich in vitamin E but notably lacking in carotenoids (provitamin A). It is a valued oil in skincare due to its occlusive and emollient properties and is recommended for skin that is aging, irritated, or sunburned.
Vitamin E is an important antioxidant for the skin, helping to scavenge free radicals and oxidative agents that are formed when the skin is inflamed. Because it mainly consists of polyunsaturated fatty acids, this oil is particularly suitable for oily skin types. The application of the oil does not leave a greasy residue film on the skin.
