Pueraria Lobata Root Extract

An extract from the roots of Kudzu, a trailing vine native to several Asian countries. It contains a combination of isoflavones and polysaccharides which have been shown to increase the production of collagen and HA in aging skin.

Overview

Pueraria lobata root extract is an extract derived from the East Asian Arrowroot, or Kudzu root. Pueraria lobata root extract is used in skincare for its beneficial properties – as an antioxidant and moisturizing humectant ingredient.

The Kudzu root is very starchy and contains a variety of bioactive compounds – mainly isoflavones (puerarin is the major one and got its name from this plant).

The starches and other polysaccharides, in the combination with isoflavones, are potent antioxidants and, in test-tube experiments, were able to ameliorate UV light-induced skin aging, mainly by increasing the production of collagen and hyaluronic acid in the skin.

An interesting fact about Kudzu is that Pueraria lobata and other related species are major invasive plants in North America. They are rapidly growing creeping vines and are able to cover the ground and trees very fast, effectively smothering all other vegetation by blocking out sunlight.
