Overview

Polysorbate 80 is a non-ionic surfactant, which means it contains no chemical charges.

It can be used in skin cleansing products, as a mild cleansing agent, but more commonly it is used for its emulsifying abilities. Polysorbate 80 is supplied as a thick amber liquid and can be added to the water phase of a product in order to solubilize small amounts of oil, such as a fragrance oil.

It also serves as a co-emulsifier that produces oil-in-water emulsions when combined with other more powerful emulsifiers, such as ceteareth-25. Polysorbate 80 can also act as a denaturant.
