Overview
Polyquaternium-51 is a biocompatible phospholipid copolymer that is designed to mimic the lipid-based cell membrane found in human skin. Its main function is as a moisturizer.
This humectant works by drawing in water from the environment or from deeper layers of the skin to keep the outer layers of skin well-hydrated.
In addition, polyquaternium-51 also acts as a film former, which means it forms a protective layer over the other ingredients in the product. This prevents them from being rinsed away too easily by water, sweat or friction. Film forming also aids in transfer resistance.
