Overview

Plantago lanceolata, or ribwort plantain, is a wonderful medicinal plant that has been used for centuries to heal small cuts, bruises, and inflamed wounds.

It contains mainly a mixture of polysaccharides which form a stable, gel-like layer on the skin, offering protective effects. Moreover, it contains flavonoids and a special iridoid compound called aucubin, which have an anti-inflammatory effect.

In the past, plantain leaves have been applied to wounds and abscesses in the form of a freshly made poultice, used to speed up healing and to protect the wound from infections. This traditional use is nowadays translated into skincare application as a soothing, anti-inflammatory ingredient for problematic skin.

The combination of flavonoids and aucubin is a powerful anti-inflammatory and microbe-killing duo. The mucilaginous polysaccharides form a protective layer, allowing the skin to heal.

Plantain is a perfect example of a plant with a specific traditional use which, after scientific research, was used for the same reason in modern evidence-based phytotherapeutics. It is definitely a great ingredient to have in your skincare product.
