Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid that is used by our body to create proteins.
It was used in dermatology in the past as a part of vitiligo treatment (in combination with other topical agents and/or UV light therapy) but nowadays the ingredient is considered to be less effective.
A modified version of Phenylalanine, Undecylenoyl phenylalanine (with undecylenic acid for better fat solubility), is used as a prospective anti-pigment treatment for dark spots and melasma. It is said to have a slightly pungent aroma.
