Overview

Opuntia ficus-indica stem extract is extracted from the stems of the prickly pear. It is a cactus whose stems have metamorphosed into flat, oblong succulent stems which contain a lot of water in their gel-like inner flesh (similar to aloe). While the fruits are most commonly used as a food source, the stems also have other uses.

Apart from being used as a vegetable or cattle feed, it has been proposed that this stem gel may be a good skincare additive to assist in the treatment of wounds and burns.

It has a cooling effect and creates a soothing film on the skin’s surface. Other constituents of the stem extract have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
