Ophiopogon japonicus root extract is obtained from the root of the dwarf lilyturf plant, also known as mondo grass. Native to China and Japan, this plant has traditionally been used in these countries as a remedy for cough, fever, and inflammation.
As for skincare, mondo grass root extract contains polysaccharides and acts as a humectant. It also has steroidal saponins and homoisoflavonoids – which have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.
