Overview

Ocimum Basilicum flower/leaf extract is an extract obtained from the flowering basil plant. It is the same basil that is used as a herb in foods, eaten raw, or crushed into a pesto.

Basil contains essential oil which is responsible for its herbal aroma. There are different cultivars of basil that differ in their essential oil constitution (to achieve a different smell and taste when used in food products), although most will contain linalool and methyl chavicol as their main constituents.

Other than essential oil, the basil extract also contains other terpenes, flavonoids, and vitamin K (which has antioxidant effects). Basil extract is used in cosmetic products for its scent and antioxidant properties.
