O-Cymen-5-ol is a colorless, pale non-viscous liquid, this material is typically used as a preservative with a high tolerance to inhibit yeasts, molds and fungi, with varied efficacy against bacteria and virus. It is typically used in low dosages to prevent growth in cosmetic products as there are limits to its use levels.

This ingredient is a thyme derivative. It has a characteristic odor and some scientific studies have shown antioxidant abilities. Currently it is being investigated as an alternative to triclosan as it is considered by the EPA as a biocide.
