Overview

Nasturtium officinale, more commonly known as watercress, is a lovely spring herb with a spicy taste and mild mustard aroma. It is not to be confused with the orange flower with the common name "nasturtium" – Tropaeolum majus. It is a water plant related to cabbage and the leaves are commonly eaten in salads, steamed, or boiled.

The extract contains flavonoids, carotenoids, and organic acids – which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Since the plant is related to mustard, watercress extract also contains various sulfur-containing compounds (mainly gluconasturtiin) which are responsible for the pungent mustard aroma.

It can be used as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant ingredient in skincare products, although some people might find the aroma a bit unpleasant.

People allergic to mustard should be cautious because they may be sensitive to watercress as well.
