Myristica fragrans kernel oil is a fragrant essential oil obtained via the steam distillation of nutmeg kernels, the same ones used as a kitchen spice.
The scent of nutmeg is described as spicy, earthy, and woody. The essential oil of nutmeg consists of dozens of different volatile compounds which mix together to create the nutmeg aroma, of which pinene, limonene, borneol, and myristicin are the most common.
Myristicin is an interesting one – when ingested in large amounts, it can be toxic and is the cause of nutmeg poisoning. Thankfully, essential oils in skincare products are only used in very small amounts and so it can do no harm in that way. Still, it is always a good idea to first test your skincare product if you are sensitive to fragrances.
Nutmeg kernel can also be extracted to produce a fatty, semi-solid oil. This is usually called nutmeg butter.
