Morus Nigra Root Extract

An extract from the roots of the black mulberry. Some of its bioactive compounds have displayed the ability to inhibit tyrosinase and to decrease the formation of dark spots. It performed even better than kojic acid.

Overview

Morus nigra root extract is a potential anti-pigment extract derived from the roots of the Morus nigra – the black mulberry. The mulberry fruits are edible and often used in preserves, jams, and alcohols.

The interesting set of bioactive compounds in all parts of the mulberry tree have brought the species to the attention of scientists. These compounds are jointly called prenylated compounds due to the presence of the isoprenyl group in the molecule.

The mulberry extract itself has also attracted the attention of dermatologists. This is due to the content of these prenylated compounds, which show powerful tyrosinase inhibitory activity – tyrosinase is the enzyme responsible for the formation of the dark pigment melanin in the skin.

As far as we know, Morus nigra root extract hasn’t been tested on humans as of yet. But, in test-tube experiments, it shows anti-tyrosinase activity more powerful than kojic acid.
