Overview

Morus alba root extract is an overall beneficial and prospective anti-pigment extract derived from the roots of the Morus alba, a white mulberry tree.

This ingredient has garnered the attention of dermatologists because of its powerful tyrosinase inhibitory activity – tyrosinase is the enzyme responsible for the formation of the dark pigment melanin in the skin. This makes Morus alba root extract a potential anti-pigment ingredient, although more tests on humans are necessary.

The bioactive compounds in the roots have antioxidant, astringent, and antimicrobial properties. It is also beneficial in treating acne and other skin diseases, due to its strong antimicrobial and antifungal activity.

The white mulberry tree is most commonly known as a food source for silkworms during the production of natural silk. The berries are also edible and used in jams and preserves, or eaten dried, and the root is used in traditional medicine all over the world.

The mulberry species has recently come to the attention of scientists due to the very interesting set of bioactive compounds found in all parts of the mulberry tree. These compounds are jointly called prenylated compounds due to the presence of isoprenyl group in the molecule.
