Mentha Viridis (Spearmint) Leaf Oil

Overview

Mentha viridis leaf oil is an essential oil distilled from the leaves of spearmint – Mentha spicata (synonyms include Mentha crispa and Mentha viridis). It is slightly different in scent from peppermint oil and is used as a fragrance and flavor ingredient in skincare products.

Unlike peppermint oil, spearmint essential oil does not contain any menthol (not even trace amounts). The minty scent is caused by a compound called R-(–)-carvone, which has a somewhat sweeter, but still fresh, minty scent.

Spearmint oil is used to aromatize and flavor chewing gums, candy, toothpaste, and skincare products.
