Overview

Melissa officinalis leaf extract is an extract obtained from the leaves of the lemon balm (or Melissa officinalis). Lemon balm is a fragrant plant that is commonly used as a calming tea or in foods.

The extract has antioxidant activity in skincare and, according to some studies, has antiviral properties. It is therefore sometimes used in creams against cold sores (Herpes simplex).

Lemon balm has a lovely, fresh, lemon-like scent. It actually only contains a very small amount of essential oil, making true pure lemon balm oil one of the most expensive essential oils. Melissa officinalis leaf extract also contains other beneficial compounds, mainly flavonoids and terpenes, which have antioxidant and antiviral activities.
