Medicago sativa extract is a fragrant and antioxidant extract obtained from the alfalfa plant, also sometimes called lucerne. It is a crop mainly grown to feed cattle, although the alfalfa seeds are sometimes sprouted and eaten.
In skincare, the Alfalfa extract is used as a fragrance with a hay-like scent (due to the presence of coumarins) and it contains various antioxidant compounds such as flavonoids and saponins.
Like other legumes, alfalfa contains phytoestrogens which are known for their ability to aid in wound healing.
