Overview

Malva sylvestris extract is an intensely colored purple extract obtained from the dark purple flowers of the common mallow (Malva sylvestris).

It is related to marsh mallow (Althaea officinalis) and they have similar uses: the extract is emollient, soothing, and acts as a thickener and gel-forming agent, which helps with the formulation of the product.

The mallow flower tea, intensely dark blue colored and at times ink-looking, is a traditional herbal remedy for dry cough and stomach aches. The active ingredient is a thick mucilage that is able to form a soothing barrier on the throat and stomach lining, as well as on the skin’s surface.

The dark blue color is due to the presence of anthocyanins – blue and purple plant pigments that are soluble in water.
