Overview

Magnesium sulfate is a naturally occurring mineral that is commonly used in skincare products as a bulking agent.

In other words, this ingredient helps control the viscosity of products like lotions and creams by making them thicker. By acting as a viscosity controlling agent, magnesium sulfate also serves to stabilize the products in which it is found.

According to an evaluation done by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel, magnesium sulfate is a very safe ingredient when it comes to skin applications. Generally used at levels up to 11% in leave-on products, this ingredient shows no irritation or toxicity at levels all the way up to 50%.
