Overview

Magnesium chloride is a type of salt, similar to table salt, which is known as sodium chloride. Instead of the chemical formula of NaCl, it is MgCl2. This white crystalline powder can be isolated from sea water and features a mildly bitter taste when dissolved in water.

When used in skincare, specifically in water-in-oil emulsions, it helps to stabilize the emulsion. It can also help thicken this type of emulsion, due in part to the ability to stabilize normally thin formulations.

Thus, it is also used as a viscosity controlling agent.
