Overview

Lens esculenta fruit extract is a water-soluble extract obtained from lentil seeds.

According to the patent holder, the extract mainly contains oligosaccharides (saccharide molecules consisting of up to 10 sugar units - much smaller than starches but bigger than simple sugars). These oligosaccharides act as humectants and attract water to the skin’s surface.

There is not much known about the effects of the extract on the skin. According to the patent, the oligosaccharide mixture consists of trehalose, maltose, maltotriose, stachyose, and verbascose. These saccharides are soluble in water and, similarly to other such compounds, attract moisture and prevent it from evaporating.

Lentils are also a good source of amino acids and various antioxidant phenolic compounds.
