Overview

Lanolin alcohol is a mixture of fatty alcohols obtained from lanolin, a waxy emollient substance derived from sheep wool.

Lanolin alcohols are mostly oil-soluble, long-chain fatty alcohols that are used in skincare products as emollients for dry and cracked skin, as well as occlusive moisturizers and emulsifiers, helping oil and water to mix in the formula.

Lanolin alcohols are obtained by hydrolysis (water-facilitated breaking) of lanolin esters. This reaction yields lanolin alcohols and lanolin fatty acids.
