Overview

Laminaria saccharina, nowadays known as Saccharina latissima, is a species of edible, brown seaweed that is also known as sugar kelp or Devil’s apron due to its shape and large surface. It is used in the extraction of alginates – a gelatin substitute that is derived from algae.

The extract from Laminaria saccharina contains many different polysaccharides apart from alginates. These are responsible for its water-binding and soothing properties. They form a film on the skin’s surface and help the skin to retain water.

Seaweed extracts in general are potent antioxidants and contain many beneficial minerals.
