Laminaria japonica, or Saccharina japonica, is a species of edible seaweed. It is one of the seaweed species used to prepare Kombu – a Japanese edible kelp that is a staple in East Asian cuisine. It is also used to extract alginates – a gelatin substitute that comes from algae.
The extract from Laminaria japonica contains many different polysaccharides which are able to form a moisturizing film on the skin’s surface.
Another type of seaweed polysaccharide (called fucoidans) has recently attracted some scientific attention and seems to have some skin whitening properties.
