Overview

Laminaria digitata, also known as oarweed, is a species of edible brown seaweed. It is used for the extraction of alginates – a gelatin substitute that comes from algae.

Laminaria digitata extract is used in skincare products for its moisturizing (humectant) properties.

The extract from Laminaria digitata contains many different polysaccharides. These other polysaccharides, along with alginates, are able to form a moisturizing film on the skin’s surface and help the skin to retain water.

Seaweed extracts in general are potent antioxidants and contain many beneficial minerals.
