Overview

Kappaphycus alvarezii extract is an extract obtained from a species of red marine algae called Kappaphycus alvarezii or elkhorn sea moss. This alga is an economically important source of carrageenan, a seaweed polysaccharide similar to agar, with water-binding properties and its own antioxidant effects.

Kappaphycus alvarezii extract, when mixed into a skincare product, has very good emollient properties and forms a humectant film on the skin, which, according to a study on volunteers, facilitates the improvement of skin texture, reduced water loss, and the general improvement of the skin.

The alleged effects of Kappaphycus alvarezii extract on DNA telomeres, as boldly stated in this patent claim, has not been confirmed by any research. The patent holder alleges that the extract has the ability to elongate the DNA telomeres in skin cells, thus prolonging their life span.

The source for this claim, however, was a test-tube experiment, meaning that there are no guarantees that it actually works like that on living human skin.
