Overview

Isopropyl alcohol is a commonly used solvent that is excellent at dissolving both polar and nonpolar substances, such as water and oils, respectively. This feature of isopropyl alcohol makes it useful for combining substances that would otherwise be incompatible.

For example, fragrance oils are typically insoluble in water, but when they are first dissolved in isopropyl alcohol, they can be easily added to water. In addition, this clear, colorless liquid can reduce viscosity of the skincare products it is used in.

Isopropyl alcohol is also an anti-foaming agent, where it reduces the appearance of unwanted foaming in leave-on skincare products.
