Overview

Isoleucine is an essential, protein-forming amino acid. Like other amino acids, isoleucine is a humectant moisturizing ingredient and is able to retain water to the skin’s surface.

One study used this ingredient in a product designed to restore the barrier function of skin suffering from eczema. Although the results were good, it is important to note that isoleucine by itself doesn't have barrier repairing properties. Instead, it enhanced the barrier repair effect of the ceramides and other ingredients in the studied product.
